UNHQ, New York: The United Nations secretary-general expressed alarm Saturday over a sharp escalation in Venezuela following U.S. military action, warning that the move could have destabilizing consequences for the region and undermine international law.

In a statement issued by his spokesman, António Guterres said the developments constituted a “dangerous precedent,” regardless of the political crisis inside Venezuela. He stressed the need for full respect for international law, including the U.N. Charter, and voiced concern that those rules may not have been observed.

“The Secretary-General is deeply alarmed by the recent escalation in Venezuela, culminating in today’s United States military action in the country, which carries potentially serious implications for the wider region,” the statement said.

Guterres urged all Venezuelan actors to pursue inclusive dialogue and to uphold human rights and the rule of law, according to the statement.

The comments were delivered by Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesman for the secretary-general, from U.N. headquarters in New York.

The U.N. response underscores growing international unease over the latest turn in Venezuela’s long-running political crisis and the broader implications of unilateral military action by a member state.

The statement was issued Saturday in New York.
