UNHQ, New York: The United States has committed a landmark $2 billion to United Nations–managed humanitarian funds, a move UN officials say will significantly expand lifesaving assistance worldwide as humanitarian needs continue to surge.

The contribution, directed to humanitarian funds managed by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, was welcomed by Tom Fletcher, the UN’s under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator. Fletcher described the pledge as an extraordinary act of leadership that would help save millions of lives.

Fletcher credited President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Under Secretary of State Jeremy Lewin for the commitment, calling the United States a long-standing humanitarian superpower. He said hundreds of millions of people are alive today because of U.S. support, with many more expected to benefit in the coming year.

Beyond funding, Fletcher emphasized that reform and accountability would be central to cooperation between Washington, OCHA and the broader humanitarian system. He said U.S. taxpayers deserve transparency and measurable results, pledging that the UN would show how each dollar delivers concrete, lifesaving impact.

The contribution also signals U.S. backing for what the UN calls its “Humanitarian Reset,” an effort to streamline aid delivery by cutting bureaucracy, reducing duplication and moving decision-making closer to crisis-affected communities. Fletcher said the reforms aim to make humanitarian action faster and more efficient, with a goal of saving 87 million lives in 2026.

The pledge was also welcomed by the UN Secretary-General. In a statement issued through his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, the Secretary-General said the funding would strengthen the UN’s ability to reach the most vulnerable and ease human suffering amid escalating global crises.

“Every dollar counts,” the statement said, adding that the UN is committed to maximizing the impact of the support. The Secretary-General also urged other donors to increase contributions as conflicts, climate shocks and displacement continue to drive humanitarian needs to record levels.

UN officials said the U.S. commitment comes at a critical moment for the global aid system, which is facing growing demands and persistent funding gaps even as emergencies multiply across regions.
