UNHQ, New York: The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency meeting Saturday at 4:00 p.m. EST (9:00 p.m. GMT) after Russia and China requested urgent consultations following reported attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel.
Diplomats said the session was requested under the Council’s emergency procedures as tensions across the Middle East continue to rise.
A second Security Council meeting has also been requested by France, Bahrain, and Colombia to address the wider escalation of military activity across the region. The time for that meeting has not yet been scheduled, according to UN diplomatic sources.
Emergency meetings of the Security Council are typically called when a situation is considered an immediate threat to international peace and security. Saturday’s request suggests that major powers inside the Council are already preparing to challenge competing narratives over the events that triggered the latest escalation.
Russia and China are expected to press for explanations from Washington and its allies and may push for language condemning the attack. Western diplomats are likely to frame the situation within the broader security context surrounding Iran and regional stability.
The two requests set the stage for a tense day at UN headquarters in New York, where the Council chamber is expected once again to become the arena for rival geopolitical positions.
Whether the Council can agree on any formal action remains uncertain. But the urgency of the requests reflects growing concern that the situation in the Middle East could widen further if diplomatic channels fail to catch up with events on the ground.
