U.S. Contradicts its Position for Sustaining Sanctions on North Korea and Approves a Joint Venture A

United Nations: Egypt’s Orascom Investment Holding announced that it has been granted an exemption from the United Nations to operate its Koryolink joint venture in North Korea that sent its shares up to daily trading limit at the Cairo Stock Exchange according to a Reuters news report.

According to diplomatic source at the United Nations familiar with the sanctions on North Korea said that this exemption comes as a surprise as it had to take the green light from the United States who in contrast is calling for a Security Council meeting on Thursday chaired by its Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to discuss continuation of the sanctions imposed by the most powerful U.N. organ in order to pressure the DPRK regime to giving up its nuclear program and denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.

Observers view this move as yet another example of the transactional approach by the Trump administration to international relations and suggest that there might be a deal between the U.S. and North Korea ahead of the Leaders week at the United Nations and possible meeting between Pompeo and Ri Yong DPRK Foreign Minister.
