Security Council at the Holocaust Museum and the White House

Washington: Members of the UN Security Council paid their respects to victims of the Holocaust during a visit to Washington D.C. organized by U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley.

The main purpose of Monday’s visit was to view missiles and equipment recovered in Yemen that the U.S. government said was supplied by Iran, in violation of Security Council resolutions.

Diplomats from 15-member council also visited the Holocaust Memorial Museum, where they learned about its work on genocide and atrocity prevention. At the museum, they also visited an exhibit focused on the arbitrary detention and torture of more than 100,000 Syrians by the regime of President Bashar al-Aassad.

“We must always remember the victims of genocide and honor their memory. And we must stand against the atrocities of today. Sadly, arbitrary detention, torture, and forced disappearance are some of many atrocities the brutal Assad regime is committing against its own people. The international community – including and especially the Security Council – must take a stand against the regime and use all available tools to help the Syrian people,” Haley said.

She added in a press release that the United States ‎”continues to support a stable, unified, and independent Syria through the full implementation of a new constitutional process and free and fair presidential and parliamentary elections under UN supervision.”
