Rohingya Exodus Sparks UN Concern

The United Nations says over half a million Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar since the end of August, with 11,000 of them crossing the border into Bangladesh on Monday alone.

The Rohingya Muslims have long been a persecuted minority within predominantly Buddhist Myanmar, but the number of refugees surged sharply on Aug. 25 when the country's military embarked on violent crackdown following insurgent attacks on security forces.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said the majority of those fleeing came from the Buthidaung area in Myanmar's conflict-wracked Rakhine state.
